At the end of the author’s reading and before the exchange between Marla and the author, I felt that the book was going to be about, not the “coming of age” per se (although there were light references), but to the “coming of aging.” I still think so.
That resonated with me, first because I am one of the charter members of “the baby-boomers” (1946) and, second, I recently wrote an essay on aging which I recorded and was published on local NPR station broadcasts.
Sounds like the author is offering the work as partly “self-help” in a tongue-in-cheek manner. I agree that humor will be the key to the work’s success.
P.S.: As an aside, I recall the joke back during Tom Jones’ heyday, that his pants were so tight that you could tell, not only what gender he was, but also his religion.
RE: ‘the coming of aging’-that’s great, Bill- I hope the author reads this! BTW, what she didn’t tell us until her time was o\up was that she had already published it-a small book you’d pick up near the market check-out—-Had she told us early, we could have been more specific in our comments—-as it was, much of what she said has been said often…too often for it to read as a ‘fresh take’-
Thanks Bill, great comments…per your usual…:)
