Nora Ephron’s  ‘Everything Is Copy’ Inspired My Novel

On the day of Taylor Swift’s ‘Tortured Poets Department’ debut, I found this reel. Until I did, I did not know that like me, Taylor Swift views Nora Ephron as a mentor. Nora Ephron was a force. She could be funny, caustic, insightful, nurturing- a real ‘mama bear’ you could not ignore. Few did. The same could be said of Taylor Swift and why both of these superb humans, many decades apart, are included in the DEDICATION portion of a novel of mine debuting in the fall of 2024, SweetSpot: Now and Then. Here’s a portion of the Dedication:

Shout outs to Nora Ephron and Taylor Swift. Ms. Ephron’s body of work includes a novel she wrote, HEARTBURN, that by her own admission, was as much memoir as novel. Taylor Swift is a lyrical poet whose song writing is also rooted in her life experiences. Both writers have given this writer courage to publish a novel rooted in my reality and crafted into fiction… .’

I am one of those writers who has always pulled from my life experiences. I don’t know how to tell a story any other way. If the roots of storytelling are not grounded in one’s life, how does a writer get inspired?  If you believe, as I do, that specificity must be the ingredient that causes readers to relatein order to have in craft jargon, how does it reach readers with its message?

This video snippet?  Taylor Swift’s love letter to Nora Ephron. There are no accidents that I found this today & for writers, everything is copy.
