SCWC: Birth of The Pitch Witch Workshop
SCWC: Birth of The Pitch Witch Workshop. We first taught this workshop at the So California Writers Conference in 2010. Given the response, we knew the Pitch Witch Workshop was needed and appreciated by writers on the road to publication.
Why learn this literary ‘art’ form?
When you can synthesize your story into one sentence that takes about 60 seconds to deliver? You know your story. When the person listening to that brief pitch responds with “Tell me more” or some version of it? That’s the goal and why we offer PitchWitch Workshops at every SCWC since 2010. Though we offer it at other venues, its birthplace, SCWC, holds a special place in our Pitch Witch hearts. Yes, Pitch Witches have hearts!

This workshop is really incredible. Marla and Jennifer have developed truly gifted ears for immediately finding the “hooks” and “what’s-at-stake” elements in your story and crafting it into a few second pitch pitch. In a this workshop, they can help you weed out all the unnecessary copy that can drag the pitch out, muddle it and stall the chance of captivating your audience and have them wanting more. Marla and Jennifer are like the “Rubiks Cubes” of editors and marketers who can move your dramatic story hooks around and into the right order to solve the puzzle for you to have the best chance in getting that “Aha! What happens next?” spark of intrigue from that important agent, editor or reader that authors only have a few seconds to grab.
Kudos! Mine went from two paragraphs to 25 words – one sentence with dramatic flair. Awesome. Thanks so much!

Margaux,
Thanks SO much for this affirmation! Jen and I really enjoy delivering Pitch Witch workshops and so glad it helped you. My gut feeling about successfully pitching your book relates to how well the author knows his/her story. Sometimes, we prematurely pitch so these sessions offer good feedback to the author-either way!
Keep us posted on your novel-as I remember, it was a hoot!
Best,
Marla
